Blanca Rodriguez is a stay-at-home mom from California. And at 28 weeks pregnant, Blanca was diagnosed with COVID-19. Her world was turned upside-down and she quickly turned to prayer.
Blanca was admitted into Loma Linda University Medical Center where she agreed to have the staff’s film crew document her emotional journey.
Dr. Maken, who cared for Blanca for seven days, said there were several moments where she thought she lost Blanca and her unborn daughter — and that “caring for COVID-19 patients who are pregnant is a nightmare.”
Blanca’s health took a turn for the worse, to the point she could barely breathe. Meanwhile, her baby girl’s health was in a steep decline due to lack of oxygen.
Dr. Courtney Martin, OB-GYN and maternity medical director, led a team of 30 doctors through Blanca’s labor, during which the ailing mom-to-be was in coma.
She was only 28 weeks pregnant at the time, but the doctors knew they needed to get the baby out in order to give her and her mom the best possible chance at survival.
Days later, Blanca awoke and had no clue that her daughter, Jade, was even born.
She wouldn’t get to meet her for another month, and the cameras were there to capture the heartwarming scene.
In the emotional video below, watch the moment Blanca is wheeled into the NICU to see and touch her baby for the very first time.
