Queen Elizabeth Attends Her First Engagement Since March But Opts Against Wearing A Face Mask

Queen Elizabeth stepped out with Prince William today for a pretty big occasion: the monarch’s first public engagement since March 2020. While people were thrilled to see the pair as they toured the┬áDefence Science and Technology Laboratory, some were also outraged by one big detail: neither the Queen nor Elizabeth were wearing face masks.

The palace’s people were quick to point out that the duo followed nearly all of the safety advisements that are currently recommended. Everyone who met the Queen tested negative for the virus, including Prince William. Many were still confused and concerned about why the 94-year-old opted against a mask.

Royal reporter Chris Ship simply explained, “Buckingham Palace says the Queen was not wearing a face mask (and nor was Prince William) after consulting her own medics and those who work at [the laboratory].”

Buckingham Palace also addressed the outcry: “Specific advice has been sought from the medical household and relevant parties, and all necessary precautions taken, working closely with [the laboratory].”

However, there are some who applaud the pair’s choice, like Royal commentator Joe Little. He explained, “The Queen and the Duke of Cambridge will inevitably be criticised for not wearing a face covering, but medical advice was sought while the royal visit was being planned and social distancing seemingly was maintained throughout. The Queen’s first official engagement away from a royal residence for the first time in seven months delivers a visible and timely reassurance that daily life can continue during the pandemic in a modified form, even for someone in their 95th year.”
