Not only does Maryann Leonard always vote, but she knows that there’s a lot riding on this election. And that’s why she was astonished when she learned she was ineligible to vote this time around. Maryann went in early, and was puzzled — obviously, a mistake was made somewhere.

“When I went up to give the woman my information she looked up and said, ‘You’re ineligible to vote,’’ and I said, ‘I can’t imagine why,’” she recalled. Trying to figure out the mystery, she asked the clerk for more information.

“She said, ‘Let me find out.’ Then she told me, ‘It says you’re dead.’”

While that seems like a horror story for anyone, Maryann didn’t let that excuse stop her from voting. She and her husband, Pat, briefly thought that maybe it was voter fraud — a concept many of us are scared of this year. In 2020, voting has become a complete concern, with many people unsure about how to make sure their vote is actually counted. It’s a fear that most of us have never experienced before.

“She was just flabbergasted by the fact that she was off the roll,” her husband Pat said.

Luckily, there was no foul play afoot. It seems as if there was just a clerical error. Someone with a name that was similar to Maryann’s name did die this year, and the details of the two women were oddly close. But, this brought about a brand new concern. If Maryann went to vote on election day, she wouldn’t have gotten through. And, there wouldn’t have been time to fix the mistake.
