Health Experts Say More Kids Have Been Drinking Hand Sanitizer That Looks Like Applesauce

Since the pandemic started, poison control centers across the country have been reporting calls about children who’ve ingested something that may look kid-friendly to eat, but definitely is not.

People have been stocking up on hand sanitizer to keep their families safe and healthy. But many brands of sanitizer feature packaging that looks so kid-friendly that children want to eat it.

The portable pouches look a lot like children’s applesauce, with bright colors and fun cartoon characters.

“The agency [Food and Drug Administration] has discovered that some hand sanitizers are being packaged in beer cans, children’s food pouches, water bottles, juice bottles and vodka bottles,” Fast Company reports. “Additionally, the FDA has found hand sanitizers that contain food flavors, such as chocolate or raspberry.”

Hand sanitizer has a high percentage of alcohol, so even a little could be extremely dangerous for kids.

We recently reported on a Canadian mom named Nikki whose mother accidentally gave her young son a hand sanitizer pack to eat — because she thought it was applesauce.

“He took a sip and immediately turned red and started coughing, so she grabbed it from him and then immediately saw it was hand sanitizer,” Nikki said. “She called her neighbor and called 911 because he started to get a little bit dozy and out of it, and then five minutes later he was falling asleep.”
