Many Americans get it wrong – can you figure out the answer?

I found the riddle below online earlier this week. Only 1 in 10 people can get the answer straight according to most websites. But I don’t think only 10% of the people that try can solve it. It’s not that hard, as long as you concentrate.

At the same time, it feels like the kind of tests that either you solve right away, or you take forever to do. Either because you miss something or due to your mind taking you in the wrong direction.

Anyway – here’s the puzzle:

“The day before yesterday, I was 17 years old. But next year I will be 20. How is that possible?”

This mystery is, it seems, anything but simple. Can you come up with the answer?

A small clue: try to think outside the box.

If you can’t find the answer, we will report it below.

A possible riddle

If you could not solve this mystery: worry not. Many have torn their hair out in desperation over this riddle.

I was born on the 31st of December.

The day before yesterday, assuming it is the 1st of January, I would be 17. The next day, I turn 18.

This year, as it is now a new year, I will be 19 on the 31st of December, and NEXT year, I will be 20 on the 31st.

Far from simple, whether you are on the logical or creative side!

Did you solve the riddle on your own? Congratulations then! You are a sharp person and have given the brain much-needed exercise!
