Deputy Eric Wendling of the Richland County Sheriff’s Office in Mansfield, Ohio, recently made a very unexpected traffic stop.
At 1:15 a.m., Deputy Wendling was patrolling the interstate when he noticed a minivan without its headlights or taillights on, weaving in and out of the marked lines.
He assumed he was about to be dealing with an intoxicated driver.
With his bodycam recording, the deputy walked up to the vehicle, popped his head into the window, and asked the driver how old he was.
“Ten,” the driver responded.
The boy repeated himself, confirming he was indeed just 10 years old and operating his father’s minivan.
As it turned out, the little boy had snuck out of his home in the middle of the night while his dad was sleeping and taken the minivan out for a drive — not understanding just how dangerous this was for him and the other people on the road.
The deputy tried to find out why the boy had decided to leave home, but he did not get a clear answer.
Watch the video below to see the exchange between Deputy Wendling and the elementary school boy. Thank goodness no one was hurt.
