The human body is a scary thing. Yes, it’s wonderful in that it gives us the ability to live and move freely. But it’s also susceptible to a lot of diseases and infections that we can’t prevent. US Olympic figure skater Maia Shibutani felt like she had a stomach virus, which is bad enough. But when she got checked out, she learned she had a tumor.
The 25-year-old Olympian shared the news on Instagram. “It’s been a really tough week,” she wrote. “Back in October, I got sick and had to go to the ER while I was in New York. It ended up being a stomach virus, but they ran some tests that showed an abnormality – it was recommended that I have a follow-up appointment to take a closer look.”
Maia shared that the MRI revealed a small mass on one of her kidneys. This past Saturday, she underwent an operation to remove it — and the good news is that she was able to get rid of it without losing her kidney altogether. While the news this week was good, it’s still a very scary diagnosis that seemed to come out of left field.
