Joe was an elderly housekeeper who had a habit of drinking his boss Sam’s wine and replacing it with water.
Sam suspected Joe but tolerated it for a while. However, when it became a daily routine, Sam decided to catch him.
Sam:
“Joe?”
Joe:
“Yes, Boss?”
Sam:
“Who drank my wine and replaced it with water?”
There was no answer.
Sam asked again, but the kitchen remained silent.
Finally, Sam marched into the kitchen.
Sam:
“What’s going on? Whenever I call your name, you answer, ‘Yes, Boss.’ But when I ask you a question, you suddenly become silent!”
Joe:
“It’s strange, Boss. In the kitchen, you can hear someone calling your name, but you can’t hear anything else they say. I swear!”
Sam:
“That’s impossible! I’ll prove you wrong. You stay here with Madam while I go into the kitchen. Then you ask me a question.”
Sam walked into the kitchen.
Joe:
“Boss?”
Sam:
“Yes, Joe?”
Joe:
“Who got the maid pregnant?”
Silence.
Joe asked again.
Still no answer.
Sam suddenly came running back from the kitchen.
Sam:
“You’re right, Joe! When you’re in that kitchen, you really can’t hear anything except your name. That’s very strange!”
